Job Description
Reporting to the Director, Labour & Employee Relations, this role will provide support to the Extendicare group of companies on daily Labour Relations matters. The incumbent will support collective bargaining through research, mandate preparation, costing, document development and the bargaining process. Support HR and Operations in grievance administration by providing training and education on collective agreements and the handling of employee issues.
This role is based at our head office in Markham, Ontario. Extendicare offers a hybrid working environment.
Accountabilities
Managing and/or advising on labour/employee relation trends, grievances, and arbitrations for all client groups.
Responsible for providing Employee Relations support to corporate client groups
Policy Research & Analysis, and provides core support for the development and revision for change, elimination, or development of new policies, human resource legislation, regulations and procedures
Provides expert advice on human resource policies and procedures to managers and supervisors, which are consistent with existing legislation and policy, and the Human Resources department's strategic direction.
Managing /reviewing/analyzing issues escalated from client group related to labour relation or implementation of collective agreements.
Providing trend analysis and recommendation to VP of Labour Relations and senior executive team to mitigate possible risk to the organization.
Leads labour negotiations for a variety of collective agreements, by researching industry data, identifying trends, surveying client groups, developing employer proposals, participating on negotiation committee and assisting with the provincial implementation of the memorandum of settlement.
Supporting Human Resources Business Partners (“HRBP”) when matters have been escalated from client groups.
Provides subject matter expertise to other stakeholders on all labour relations and employee relation matters.
Counsel on the interpretation, administration, application on multiple different collective agreements.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
Minimum 5 years of Labour Relations experience in a unionized environment, with an emphasis on significant multi-site collective agreement locations.
Demonstrated knowledge/experience of leading and/or supporting collective agreement negotiations.
Strong knowledge/experience with interpretation of collective agreements.
Demonstrated ability to provide advice and counsel to business while using ability to influence.
Broad knowledge of employment legislation: Labour Relations Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Human Rights Code, Employment Standards Act, etc.
Demonstrated experience in being innovative, taking initiative, and being proactive.
Strong consultation/facilitation, analytical, communication and strategic thinking skills are required.
Ability to balance multiple priorities and pressing deadlines.
Some intermittent provincial travel may be required.
