Job Description 

The Cook 1 is responsible for the preparation, cooking, and service of high-quality, nutritious meals that meet the dietary needs and preferences of residents in accordance with approved menus, food safety standards, and regulatory requirements. Working in a long-term care environment, the Cook plays a key role in enhancing residents’ quality of life by ensuring mealtimes are enjoyable, dignified, and safe.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and cook meals and snacks according to standardized recipes and planned menus that meet residents' dietary requirements (e.g., therapeutic diets, texture modifications).

  • Ensure all food is prepared, handled, and stored in compliance with health and safety regulation.

  • Monitor food inventory levels and assist with ordering, receiving, and proper storage of supplies.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen and work environment at all times.

  • Follow all food handling procedures and infection prevention and control protocols.

  • Collaborate with the dietary team to accommodate special diets and resident preferences.

  • Assist with plating, portioning, and serving meals in an efficient and attractive manner.

  • Record food temperatures, cleaning logs, and other documentation as required by facility policy and regulatory standards.

  • Support in training and mentoring of dietary aides or new kitchen staff as needed.

  • Participate in menu planning and provide feedback for continuous improvement.

  • Communicate effectively with other departments to ensure smooth kitchen operations and quality resident care.
     

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; formal culinary training or Red Seal certification is an asset.

  • Food Handler’s Certification is an asset.

  • 1–2 years of experience in a commercial or institutional kitchen, preferably in a healthcare or long-term care setting.

  • Knowledge of dietary requirements for seniors, including modified diets and texture-altered foods.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Physical ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in a fast-paced environment.
